The term “familiar spirit” does not refer to a friendly spirit, a guardian spirit, or an ancestral spirit, and the concept is not new. It comes directly from the Old Testament and is translated from the Hebrew word ’ōb (אוֹב). In Scripture, a familiar spirit refers to a demonic spirit associated with the dead and consulted for forbidden revelation. These spirits are described as attaching themselves to a practitioner, someone trained or practiced in communicating with them.
In contemporary culture, the language has changed. People rarely use the term familiar spirit. Instead, they refer to mediums, psychics, channelers, intuitive readers, or shamans. While the terminology is modern, the underlying practice is ancient. Throughout the Bible, this pattern of seeking spiritual insight from sources outside of God, is consistently condemned. But, in recent years, these practices have not only resurfaced, they have become widely accepted and increasingly mainstream.
Familiar Spirits in Pop Culture
TV shows like Long Island Medium (TLC), Ghost Adventures (Travel Channel), and Celebrity Psychic have thousands of followers. These programs feature mediums who communicate with the dead, engage in paranormal investigations, and explore intuitive readings of spiritual signs. Hollywood is capitalizing off the obsession with films like the Sixth Sense which portrays a gifted communicator interacting with spirits. All these shows and movies, whether real or entertainment for shock value, normalize the idea of seeking spiritual insight outside of God.
This normalization has resulted in cultural familiarity with demonic communications. Across the US, we’ve seen a rise in Tarot and oracle card readers, mediums claiming to contact dead loved ones, and psychic readings in family centers, like state fairs. Social media influencers are popularizing spirit communication techniques, energy readings, and promoting courses that teach meditation for inner wisdom and access to the spirit dimension. Tarot reading and astrology apps are also widely used mainstream, even among people who wouldn’t ordinarily consider themselves dabblers in the occult.
While most people consider this behavior as harmless curiosity or strictly for emotional comfort, the Bible is clear that consulting with familiar spirits is strictly forbidden. Scripture does not deny spiritual experiences, but it does restrict their source.
Prohibitions Against Familiar Spirits
Even before the word ’ōb appeared in scripture, the practice of communicating with demon spirits had already proved destructive. The serpent’s conversation with Eve is the first recorded communication between a non-divine spiritual entity with man. In Satan’s conversation with Eve, we see that he undermined the spiritual revelation she received from God by mixing truth with a lie. The result was death.
This canon event also serves as an instructional tool that a counterfeit source of revelation is a dangerous substitute for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This pattern is essential to understanding later prohibitions against these activities.
31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I [am] the LORD your God. [Lev 19:31 KJV]
The book of Leviticus provides the first explicit biblical appearance of the term “familiar spirits.” And the scripture links familiar spirits to defilement. Although people think the practice is harmless, God regards it as an issue of spiritual contamination, not curiosity, and consulting those spirits is framed as turning away from God
Just a chapter later, consulting familiar spirits is labeled spiritual prostitution and the penalty reflects how seriously God treats unauthorized spiritual access.
6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. … 27 A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood [shall be] upon them. [Lev 20:6, 27 KJV]
God groups familiar spirits with divination, necromancy, and sorcery, all of which are labeled abominations.
10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. [Deu 18:10-12 KJV]
The Fruit of Familiar Spirits
When people consult with familiar spirits, there is often an allure. Their words appear true and can be accurate based on what those spirits have observed, which is why their messages resonate or feel precise. But, spirits cannot see the revelatory future.
They can project outcomes based on patterns, but they cannot declare the future the way that God does. Remember, the serpent told Eve something true (they won’t instantly die), even while hiding the full consequence (spiritual death and separation) of disobeying God. In like manner, these spirits distort the truth in an attempt to confuse us and draw us away from the truth of God’s divine decrees.
These spirits occupy regions. Since they are not mortal, over time they observe people and their emotional responses, trauma patterns, repeated choices, and generational tendencies. They use these to form spiritual strongholds that work against the mind and exploit human vulnerability, especially during times of transition. They like to trap people in destructive patterns of thinking and behaving.
This is why patterns of behavior can often be observed within specific regions. Some cities struggle disproportionately with violence, others with drug abuse, and still others with deep, persistent poverty. Similar patterns can also appear within families. In some households, multiple generations may struggle with alcoholism, violence, broken marriages, or recurring dysfunction, even when individuals within the family have sincerely confessed Jesus Christ.
If you or someone in your family has consulted a medium and there is ongoing, cyclical sin or confusion that seems resistant to change, it may indicate spiritual interference rather than isolated personal failure. A sudden loss of clarity in an area of life that was once stable, feeling disoriented or “turned around” in your thinking, can also be a sign of a familiar spirit at work. Because these influences are destructive, the question becomes not whether freedom is needed, but how it is obtained.
How to Find Deliverance
1. Repent
All deliverance in scripture flows from being submitted to God. When we recognize that our thoughts or actions are not in alignment with God’s word, we start with repentance.
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; [Act 3:19 KJV]
Repentance here means turning away from unauthorized spiritual sources, renouncing revelation from demonic sources, and re-establishing God as the only authority over our lives.
There’s no need to feel condemned. This is not about shame but about restoring spiritual order.
2. Renounce
In the Book of Acts, New Testament believers did not just stop with private repentance.
And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. 19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all [men]: and they counted the price of them… [Act 19:18-19 KJV]
They confessed with their mouth that they were no longer participating in ungodly practices and even divulged to others what they were leaving. This is renunciation in action. In showing this event, scriptures affirm this behavior as an act of obedience.
3. Submit
Deliverance fails if we try to resist without true submission. The Apostle James wrote:
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
[Jas 4:7 KJV]
Submission means obeying what God has already revealed, and when we need further guidance, seeking it carefully in prayer while waiting on His response. Submission also requires honest recognition of where our thoughts and actions are out of alignment with God. We dismantle strongholds through the Word of God by intentionally studying Scripture, allowing it to renew our minds, and re-forming our thoughts according to what God calls true and right.
4. Close Doors
Lastly, deny the enemy any future access point. Paul warned the church at Ephesus:
Neither give place to the devil. [Eph 4:27 KJV]
Destroy tarot cards, charms, occult books, and objects. It’s important that you destroy them. Do no sell them or donate them to others. Cancel and remove any apps, readings, or subscriptions tied to divination from your devices. Refuse to invest in or consume media that glorifies demonic spirit consultation.
Conclusion
Scripture is clear that God does not leave His people unaware, vulnerable, or without hope. While familiar spirits operate through deception and unauthorized access, their influence is not permanent and their authority is not supreme.
Deliverance begins when spiritual order is restored. Through repentance, renunciation, submission, and obedience to God’s Word, believers reestablish the rightful authority of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
We find freedom by returning to God as the only trusted source of truth, guidance, and revelation, and allowing His Spirit to lead us into truth.
