How to Stop Procrastinating and Start Living Your Purpose

Let me ask you a question: How often do you find yourself juggling all the things—family, faith, personal dreams—and still feel like you’re always one step behind? Let’s be real, sometimes it’s hard to keep up when the laundry’s piled up, the to-do list is out of control, and you’re just trying to make it through the day without losing your mind!

Why Procrastination Hits Us Hard

As moms, we wear a lot of hats. We’re the nurturer, the caretaker, and sometimes, the breadwinner. And it’s so easy to keep putting off the things that are important to us because we’re busy meeting everyone else’s needs. But let me tell you something from the heart: procrastination is often rooted in self-doubt, fear of failure, and even perfectionism.

And here’s the tough truth: when we procrastinate, we’re not just delaying tasks; we’re delaying the incredible plans God has for our lives. The Word tells us:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11

We’ve got to stop letting procrastination keep us from that future!

My Procrastination Drama

Earlier this year, I had a major project for my church. I was organized—I created a detailed list of action items, prioritized them by urgency, and even set a solid deadline. I had the best of intentions, but on the day I was supposed to start, during the time I had carved out for the project, I found myself reaching out to a friend “just to catch up.” Before I knew it, an hour had passed—and so had my window to start working.

I felt so guilty. I had dedicated that time, and yet I wasted it. The next day, I knew something had to change. Before diving back into the project, I prayed, asking God to guide me in my work. And you know what? Instead of sticking to my original plan and tackling the most urgent tasks first, I decided to start with something simple. Just that small, quick win gave me the momentum I needed to keep going—and suddenly, the project didn’t feel so overwhelming anymore.

God showed me that sometimes, it’s not about following the perfect plan, but about taking that first faithful step.

The Spiritual Weight of Procrastination

Let’s get real for a moment. When we put off the things God has placed on our hearts, we’re not just affecting our to-do list. We’re holding back our spiritual growth. I know it feels heavy sometimes—the fear, the overwhelm—but God’s calling us to trust Him, especially with our time and our talents.

Think about the Proverbs 31 woman—she wasn’t perfect, but she was diligent, faithful, and intentional with her time. God sees and honors our efforts, even when they feel small, but we’ve got to be willing to start!

How to Break the Cycle of Procrastination

Ready to break free from procrastination? Here’s how we do it:

1. Get to the Root of It

What’s causing you to procrastinate? Is it fear? Perfectionism? Take a moment to pray and reflect. When you understand the “why,” you can start breaking free from its grip.

2. Set Small, Doable Goals

The hardest part is just getting started. So instead of tackling that massive goal all at once, break it down. Even 15 minutes a day can move you closer to your God-given calling. It’s about progress, not perfection.

3. Prioritize What Really Matters

Ask yourself this: Does this task move me closer to God’s purpose for my life? If the answer is yes, it goes to the top of your list. Let your faith guide your productivity.

4. Create Accountability

You don’t have to do this alone! Find a group of like-minded Christian moms or a mentor who can help keep you on track. Accountability is a game-changer.

God’s Plan Over Procrastination

Here’s the beautiful truth: God didn’t create us to live in constant stress and chaos. He designed us for purpose. Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

When we align our goals with our faith, we can confidently walk in His plan—trusting that even the smallest steps are guided by His hand.

No More Waiting!

I know life gets crazy, and it’s easy to push your dreams to the bottom of your priority list. But I want you to hear me on this: You were made for more than just getting by. You were made to live fully, to thrive in the purpose God’s given you.

And to help you get started, I’ve created something special just for you.
