Have you ever wondered why you are here? I mean, why do you exist at this moment in time? Why are you who you are and not someone else in another country in another part of the world? Why do you have the family you have or the friends you have? Why have you had the experiences you’ve had? If you’ve never taken the time to answer those questions, there’s a good chance you’re not living a life of purpose.
Life purpose is more than working paycheck to paycheck. It’s more than paying bills or taking vacations. It’s more than buying things. If there’s anything that life will teach you, it’s that money, things, and even relationships don’t provide lasting satisfaction. You weren’t born to just live and die. God has designed your life with intent.
Christians who live a life of purpose have insight into their own existence. They understand that God has a plan for them and they center their goals and aspirations around the pursuit of that purpose.
They live life playing to the gifts and talents God has entrusted to them and they don’t waste time focusing on their weaknesses. Believers who live a life of purpose don’t spend a lot of time worrying about the “what ifs.”
Instead, they understand that there are conscious choices that can either bring them closer to or take them further from being the person God has created them to be.

People who live a life of purpose don’t waste time comparing themselves to others because they know, no one else can fill the unique role they have in the earth. Believers who live a life of purpose, know they were created to add value to the world.

Every notable person in the bible is either known for how they enhanced or detracted from the lives of others.
To live a life of purpose means using your gifts, talents, and energy to add value to the world.
Jesus said this of himself,
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
John 10:10, NLT
If we use Jesus as our model, then we can live a life of purpose by helping others enjoy a rich and satisfying life, both here and into eternity.
The methods we use will be different because we’re all different. The challenges we tackle and the people we serve will vary, but we all have a purpose to magnify God in this broken world and point others to the path of joy and hope.
How can you know if you’re living a life of purpose?
Try answering these questions.
- Are you satisfied with your contribution to the world or do you have more to give?
- Look at your circle of influence (family, friends, coworkers, church members, strangers you pass each day). What have you done to make their lives richer?
- Can you do more to exercise your gifts and talents in the service of others?
- What attitudes, emotions, or personal distractions are keeping you from enriching the lives of others?
